Wadden Sea, World Heritage Unesco:

The Frisian Wadden coast with its untouched natural areas, its beautiful flora and fauna, the colors in the sky, the tides, the mud flats and the sea are almost unearthly. But this also applies to the picturesque cities, the beautiful beaches, the extensive landscape and the sunset on the mudflats. You have beautiful views at Holwerd and Wierum. Keep reminiscing until it gets dark, because nowhere are the nights so dark with bright stars as here. An experience not to be missed during your stay.

You can view various art projects along the Wadden Sea coast. One of these projects is the sculpture ‘Waiting for high water’ by Jan Ketelaar. A full and a thin woman looking out over the Wadden Sea. The image is about the search for balance and exchange. The statues are on the Nieuwe Zeedijk in Holwerd.

Mudflat hiking:

The Wadden Sea was declared a World Heritage Site in 2009 and the most beautiful nature reserve in the Netherlands in 2018. Explore the wide landscape with its silence and the flowing water of untouched nature. The sea that flows seamlessly into the horizon. Your senses are stimulated by the smell of the sea, the beautiful sun glare in the water and the silence. An experience that everyone should have once in their life.

Cycling and walking routes:

Hantum is located in Northeast Friesland, where there is a network of more than 50 historic hiking trails. The beautiful landscapes have a rich cultural history. There is, for example, the famous Eleven Cities Route of more than 200 km, which is divided into 46 stages. Or do you want to walk your own pilgrimage? Then follow in the footsteps of Frisian monastic history with the Bonifatius Kloosterpad.

Do you prefer to ride a bicycle? With the cycling network junction system you can cycle the most beautiful routes. One even runs through Hantum. But what about the Fryske Wâlden? This is known for its bocage landscapes. Want to recover from that long bike ride? In this area there are 11 picnic benches in beautiful locations.

How about the Frisian craft route along the Wadden Sea. You will visit the places Anjum and Moddergat. But Dokkumer Grootdiep is also a beautiful route. Dokkum used to have an open connection with the Lauwersmeer and the Waddensea. Enough beautiful routes to discover during your stay with us.

Visit one of the islands:

Our B&B is ideally located to make a trip to one of the islands. This way you can easily take the boat to Ameland in Holwerd. Enjoy the silence there too. Walk or cycle through the great outdoors. You can enjoy the distant views here. The island Ameland has 100 km of cycle paths through the woods and dunes.

The island Schiermonnikoog is also easily accessible by taking the boat from Lauwersoog. This car-free island is no less than 18 kilometers long and if you don’t have a bicycle to take with you, you can easily rent a bicycle there to explore the beautiful flora and fauna of this island.

Dokkum:

Not far from Hantum you will find the turning point of the Elfstedentocht: Dokkum. This old fortified city has a lot to offer. In the old buildings you will find cozy shops, restaurants, terraces and an old beer brewery. And how special are the strongholds that chime its bells at 9.50 pm as a reminder of earlier times when the city gates would close in ten minutes? A visit to the Boniface Park with the Boniface Chapel, the IJsfontein on the market, or the museum ‘the Admiralty House’ certainly makes a day in Dokkum a success. And then we haven’t even mentioned the canals with its beautiful buildings. In short, Dokkum is a sober but hip city, where you can enjoy shopping, have a drink on a terrace after a walk, or discover culture.
